The apostle John has relentlessly hammered home throughout this epistle the truth that a correct view of the Lord Jesus Christ is essential to salvation. It is valuable to remember that a personal relationship with Christ is essential to abiding in Him and walking in the Spirit. John begins chapter 5 by reminding us that only the one who “believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God,” (vs. 1) while again we note that verse 13 is the key to the entire letter: “These things have I written unto you… that ye may know that ye have eternal life…” Finally, John writes in verse 20, “And we know that the Son of God is come and hath given to us an understanding, that we may know Him that is true…” Jesus Christ is the focal point of redemptive history, and the Father has repeatedly testified that He is the Messiah, Savior, Redeemer, and King.
