There are those who think the church, like any business, should find out what its customers want and then give it to them. Only then can it hope to remain relevant. That may be good marketing strategy, but it overlooks the fact that the church is not a business selling a commodity. The church’s priorities are not determined by surveys of unbelievers or marginal Christians, but by the truth of God’s Word. The church must submit to the authority of Scripture. When it does so, the result will not merely be sound doctrine, but holiness, which is the key to the church’s blessing and impact in the world. Even though Scripture is clear that holiness is central to the Lord’s will for the life of the church, the most neglected principle of the church-growth movement is the confrontation, restoration, or discipline of those who sin.
