Two opposing spheres will be discussed from this text, the darkness and the light. Believers have been “delivered out of the power of darkness” and made “meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light.” (Col 1:12) The Bible goes on to say, “Ye are all the children of the light, and the children of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness…” (1 Thess 5:5) “Ye, brethren, are not in darkness…” (1 Thess 5:4), “For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light.” (Eph 5:8) We have to walk in a way that is consistent with where grace has placed us. A believer is in the light; he walks in the light, and should not walk anywhere else. He may walk carelessly and may stumble or fall, but he will walk in the light. The light of the Spirit of God according to the word of God will consistently expose the thoughts and behavior of the believer. If a person’s normal habitual way of walking is not in keeping with the character of God, John declares that this person is not in fellowship with God. His profession is false; he lies. He is not in fellowship with God, for his walk is contrary to the truth.
