Nehemiah has proven to be a steadfast leader as he and the Israelites faced opposition from abroad. They stood fearless in the face of exhaustion, frustration, and opposition. Now Nehemiah was being called upon to address grievances at home. He had developed and activated a well-designed plan against the opposition from enemies, now he was being challenged with the task of protecting the builders from one another. It is one thing to deal with attacks from enemies, and it is quite another thing to be attacked by your own kinsmen. The saddest fact is that no building takes place during this chapter. There was plenty of pressure upon the Jews because of the famine as well as the taxes and tributes. However, instead of coming to each other’s aid, the wealthiest Jews were taking this opportunity to levy heavier burdens upon their own countrymen. This Sunday, we want to look at who was guilty, what they were guilty of, and what did Nehemiah do to fix the problem.
