The old covenant had glory, but so superior is the new covenant that it is as if the old covenant had no glory because of the glory that surpasses it. The old covenant fades away when its function is complete, when it has produced conviction and repentance, but the new covenant remains permanent and will never be superseded or supplemented. The Scriptures declare that the new covenant for believers is “The law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus made me free from the law of sin and of death” (Rom. 8:2). Realizing one is a sinner under condemnation by the Law should produce repentance and a cry to God for mercy. Realizing one is saved by grace should produce love and service for God.
