Melchisedec in the Bible is a significant personality. He teaches us much about God’s program. In the Old Testament, the altar of worship and the throne for ruling were to be kept distinctly separate. However, Melchisedec, priest of the Most High God, was also King of Salam. In the Hebrew, the name Melchizedek means “king of righteousness.” The word Salem means “peace” (the Hebrew word shalom), therefore Melchizedek is “king of peace” as well as “king of righteousness.”
“Righteousness” and “peace” are often found together in Scripture. “And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance forever.” (Isaiah 32:17) “Mercy and truth are met together; righteousness and peace have kissed each other.” (Psalm 85:10) We want to explore this morning how righteousness and peace are seen in our Savior, Jesus Christ.
