“Jesus Christ, the same yesterday, and today, and forever.” These beautiful words, well known and loved by the people of God everywhere, take on a new beauty when considered in their context. Special pastors and spiritual leaders, whom we knew, have departed. “Remember them” and the things they taught us. Good men who served us well for so many years are gone or will one day be gone. We love them and we will mourn their passing. But it is not so with Jesus. He was with us yesterday, dying for us, teaching us, and loving us. Today He is in glory, interceding for us, and has sent us the Paraclete, our Helper, to guide us through this life. Tomorrow and forevermore He will be ours unchangeably, and we shall be with Him and like Him for we shall see Him as He is. (1 John 3:2) Our earthly friends may come, and go. We appreciate them; we bid them farewell and we remember them. Jesus remains the same. It is as if He would say to us, “Fear not … I am He that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore.” (Rev 1:18)
