Nehemiah demonstrates his faith in God as he begins to encounter opposition to the work God had called him to do. No matter what you are doing for the cause of Christ, the Devil will make sure you encounter opposition. Whether it is opposition to the work necessary to please God in your marriage, parenting, employment, church relationships, or your personal walk with Him. Nehemiah offers in this chapter an insight into leadership that is often overlooked. With the kind of humility that befits a godly leader, Nehemiah gives all the credit to the people when he writes, “So built we the wall…for the people had a mind to work” (4:6). When it comes to the work of the Lord, there is no place for spectators or self-appointed advisors and critics; however, there is always room for workers. As we study this chapter, we will discover principles that apply to all areas of work, especially the work of building the church for the glory of God.
