One preacher tells this story that illustrates this chapter so well. In a certain church, there was a man who always ended his prayers with, “And, Lord, clean the cobwebs out of my life! Clean the cobwebs out of my life!” One of the members of the church became weary of hearing this same insincere request week after week, because he saw no change in the petitioner’s life. So, the next time he heard the man pray, “Lord, clean the cobwebs out of my life!” he interrupted with, “And while you’re at it, Lord, kill the spider!” God does not want us to be content to clean cobwebs, but rather He wants us to address the spiders that cause the cobwebs. The Christian kills spiders by acknowledging the principles of God’s word (28-29), the plan for God’s people (30-31), and the priority of God’s church (32-39).
