Some of the greatest advise I have heard in recent days came from the mother of the governor of Kentucky, Matt Bevin. She told him, “Son, always be sure to give back, in every venue of life, more than you take.” This is great advice as it relates to the Christian life. We must learn to sacrifice for the greater good and the greater cause. In our self-centered, self-promoting, self-preserving, and self-sufficient world, Christians are called to model the servant’s heart of our Savior who came not to be ministered unto, but to minister and to give His life a ransom for many. Abel modeled submission to His Savior by exercising sacrifice rather than giving a mere offering. He gave the blood of a lamb rather than the fruit of the land.
