It has been said that the call of God to Abraham consisted of two parts: there was a command and a promise. The command was “Get thee out … unto a land that I will show thee.” (Gen 12:1) The promise was “Unto thy seed will I give this land.” (Gen 12:7) The operative word, the great principle with Abraham, as with Noah and the others before him, was that he obeyed. “Get thee out,” said the Lord; “And he went out,” says the writer to the Hebrews. Abraham’s faith took him outside of his comfort, convenience, and community not knowing whither he was going. It was indeed a step of faith that separated him from his country and family and propelled him towards a land that he did not know and had never seen. The lesson we learn from Abraham is to (1) listen for God’s voice, (2) look for God’s vision, and (3) live in God’s victory.
