By faith Jacob blessed the sons of Joseph, knowing exactly what he was doing, as he pronounced the greater blessing upon the younger son, Ephraim. Here again, the first man is displaced and the second man is being brought into blessing. Much like the first man Adam has been displaced with the second man, Christ. The facts of verse 22 are gathered from the closing verses of Genesis. Joseph’s heart was not in Egypt. Joseph in Egypt predicted the future exodus of the nation from that land. As yet he would know nothing of the pending bondage. Nor would he have details of the exodus as are now recorded in Exodus 12. But by faith he knew that there were promises to be fulfilled with regard to the land, which had been sworn to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, and accordingly he knew that God would sometime, somehow, bring them up out of Egypt to Canaan. “God will certainly visit you”, Joseph had predicted, “and ye shall carry my bones hence.” This was the language of faith. The nation of Israel honored the oath. They carried Joseph’s bones with them out of Egypt. (Ex. 13:19) They carried them with them through all their wilderness wanderings, and eventually buried them decades later in Shechem in the Promised Land. (Josh. 24:32)
