This letter is the outpouring of Paul’s heart caused by the information, which he received. More than any other of Paul’s letters, it shows how strong his feelings were when he wrote it. The Corinthians had received his previous letter with a proper spirit; it had brought them to repentance over sin, and the majority of the congregation showed the warmest affection for the apostle. All this relieved his mind, and filled his heart with gratitude to God. When writing to the church as an obedient, affectionate, and penitent church, there is no limit to Paul’s tenderness and love; however, when he turns to the wicked, the purposeful corrupters of the truth among them, there is a severe tone which is not found in any other of his writings, even the letter to the Galatians.
