Pastor’s Bible Reading Schedule:
Leviticus 11:1-13:46
Key Thought:
Chapter 11 deals with all the rules about eating. Moses, under inspiration, reveals what is considered clean and unclean. God did not fully give the reasons why certain foods were unclean, although He did give us some hints. Not all matters rendered unclean by God were for sanitary reasons. The pig was used in some pagan religious ceremonies, and God commanded that it not be used in sacrifice (Is. 66:17). However, the bull was also used in pagan ceremonies, yet God allowed its use in sacrifice. Some scholars attribute an animal’s uncleanness to its habit of wandering in the desert waste places, which was thought to be the habitation of unclean spirits.
The nations that bordered Israel did offer some of these animals in their rituals and ate them during their celebrations. Perhaps God sought to draw some strict ritual boundaries in order to discourage the Israelites from attending these gatherings. While we can’t be certain of all the reasons why God designated some animals clean and some unclean, we do know the reasons came from a holy desire on God’s part to keep His people clean and unspotted from the world.
