Pastor’s Bible Reading Schedule:
Psalm 45-47
The first institution that God established was marriage, an expression of his goodness to man. Beginning with the first wedding ceremony in Eden, each subsequent joining of a man and woman together in marriage is a celebration of God’s blessing upon his creation. Psalm 45 reflects this divine goodness in marriage. Unique among all the psalms, it is a song of praise to the king on his wedding day.
The identity of the king is not given, although he must have been a member of David’s dynasty, and the bride was a foreign princess. The wedding ceremony reflects the international prominence of the king. Many dignitaries attended the festive occasion, bringing their extravagant gifts (verse 12). Undoubtedly, this psalm was used during more than one royal wedding. It is a masterful piece of inspired literature that extols the joy and blessings of marriage.
God uses the marriage relationship to help illustrate the relationship He wants to enjoy with us. He desires that we trust Him completely and that our communication with Him is unhindered and honest. May we nurture our relationship with Him as we learn from the example of earthly marriage.
