Psalm 114-116
As the deliverer of His people, God delights in intervening in the affairs of this world to rescue believers out of their perils. When it is His will, God comes to their aid, in all His perfect timing. He acts on their behalf and makes a way when, humanly speaking, there is no way for their escape. When God delivers His own, He opens a door that no person can close, ushering them out of their predicament. He then goes before them, leading them into the safety of His will. No obstacle is too great for God to overcome. No enemy is too great for Him to defeat. He is the God of new beginnings, the God who releases His people from their captivity. Whether it be from sin or unjust suffering, God longs to set believers free from all that imprisons them.
This message of divine deliverance comes through loud and clear in Psalm 114. It is a hymn that remembers two exodus experiences in which God, first, parted the Red Sea and, second, the Jordan River. This song of celebration commemorates God’s mighty deeds in releasing Israel from enslavement to her Egyptian masters and in removing all obstacles before her. The account of the exodus is rehearsed here in highly poetic language as the waters of the Red Sea and Jordan River are personified as fleeing from the presence of God when they parted. Here is encouragement for all believers to be reminded that God delivers His own people from sin and suffering. He makes a way out when there seems to be no way of escape.
