Psalm 108-110
In the face of mounting difficulties and growing dangers, and amid the crucible of fiery trials, a true faith will ultimately remain strong and steadfast. This is the unwavering nature of faith that is anchored in God. Trusting the Lord does not naively explain away one’s problems, nor make them less than what they really are. Neither does faith go into denial and pretend that problems do not exist. To the contrary, faith faces problems head-on with a positive, triumphant outlook. Faith believes that God will inevitably work for our good as He pursues His own glory.
In the midst of every difficulty, faith always sees the opportunity for God to work. Faith is always up, not down; always encouraged, not discouraged; always reaching forward, not retreating backward; always overcoming, not being overcome. Faith is always climbing to the top of the pile, not languishing under it. Though it may take on much water in the storms of life, a true faith is unsinkable.
This is the kind of faith that we see in the life of David in Psalm 108. It is a hymn of trust in God, a song of triumph over God’s enemies. This psalm is a repeat of two previous psalms, which are joined together here. In this psalm, David combined portions of Psalm 57 and Psalm 60 to form this one psalm. In combining these two psalms, the laments from the previous two works were omitted and only David’s exaltation and confidence in God were merged together. Thus, it contains a double portion of triumphant faith in God. This potent psalm provides encouragement for the soul that trusts God.
