Suggested Bible Reading: Proverbs 19-21
Devotional Thought:
Title: “The Treatment of Others.”
Proverbs 19 does not lend itself to one single theme but does contain a variety of themes, which are interwoven together. How we treat others reveals our true value system. This is simply one of the themes of this chapter, but what an important theme it is. Another theme that is prevalent in this chapter is the consequences of actions, the natural paybacks in the moral universe of God. In this chapter, poverty is almost seen as preferred and we are cautioned against the dangers of wealth. Elsewhere in Proverbs, prosperity is seen as a gift from God, and is the result of pleasing God and doing right. Solomon is not contradicting himself here, only adding the note of caution that wealth brings with it those who would be friends for what they can obtain from you. Perjury and its punishment are also highlighted, reminding us that in the moral universe, there is the inevitable facing of its consequences. Proverbs is a book of what generally happens and does admit of exceptions. It can be remembered, however, that ultimate consequences are eternal, even if not seen in this life. In rapid-fire sequence, we are reminded of our actions and their consequences in virtually every sphere of life. Family life is a topic seen in several of the verses in this chapter: the blessing and bother of a wife, the need for wisdom and purpose in child rearing, the danger of a child who lacks appreciation for his parents, the foolish son is warned, and failure in brotherly care one for another can all be seen in these verses. The wisdom of Solomon is relevant to our day in which we have been called to bear a testimony for God. Applying the principles of Proverbs to our family life, private life, business life, and church life will serve to ensure the blessing of God upon our walk with Him. Ancient wisdom for modern man is the essence and theme of this entire book. Reading and re-reading proverbs continually throughout our lives will only serve as a help and guide as we strive to faithfully serve our Great God.
