Suggested Bible Reading: Genesis 48-50
Devotional Thought:
Warren Wiersbe says it well: “Jacob’s desire was that his funeral would be a clear witness that he was not an idol-worshiping Egyptian but a believer in the true and living God. When you stop to think that your funeral and burial are the last public testimonies you will ever give, it makes you want to plan carefully. Making your last will and testament is important, but don’t neglect your last witness and testimony.” Jacob left behind the nucleus of a great nation and the testimony of what a great God can do with an imperfect man who seeks to live by faith. Joseph teaches us about the importance of showing honor to whom honor is due. First, Joseph shows honor to his father. (vs. 1-14) Joseph shows affection to, admiration for, appreciation for, and accountability to his father. Secondly, Joseph shows humility to his brethren. (vs. 15-21) It is understandable that with Jacob’s presence about to be gone, Joseph’s brothers had reservations for potential consequences; therefore, they requested particular grace. It was the brother’s choice to repent for pious behavior, and Joseph’s forgives for his brother’s past wounds. We are never more like Christ then when we learn to forgive. Joseph makes the case for the providence of God and his faith in God’s omniscience. Joseph makes it clear that he plans to provide personal care for his brethren. We know we have truly forgiven when we are willing to care for and meet the needs of those who have mistreated and wronged us. Thirdly, Joseph shows hope for his brethren. (vs. 22-26) Joseph challenges his brethren to remember God’s program, promises, and picture. As we learn from the illustration of the farmer in 2 Timothy 2:6, We can only get God’s product when we are willing to follow His program.
