Pastor’s Bible Reading Schedule:
Deuteronomy 9-11
Key Thought:
James 5:16 says, “The effectual, fervent prayer of a righteous man, availeth much.” In our reading today, we no doubt, have an example of the prayers of a righteous man. Moses is considered one of the greatest examples of a leader in all the Bible, but in chapter 9, we find the reason. Moses knew how to get in touch with God.
Deuteronomy 9:6 says, “Understand therefore, that the LORD thy God giveth thee not this good land to possess it for thy righteousness; for thou art a stiffnecked people.” We must remember that prayer is not an avenue to get what we want, but rather to express our dependence upon the Lord to learn and to do what He wants. Moses, reminds the Israelites of why he had to pray for them. It was because they deserved to be destroyed for their sinfulness. I am reminded that I was in the same situation before my salvation, but there were people praying for me. I wonder just how much time we each spend, praying for the lost around us? Moses said, “Thus I fell down before the LORD forty days and forty nights, as I fell down at the first; because the LORD had said He would destroy you.” (9:25) Moses was a great leader. He was a compassionate leader. He was a wise leader! Moses prayed for those that He led. I think the lesson is clear, “the effectual, fervent, prayer of a righteous man, availeth much.”
