Suggested Bible Reading: 2 Samuel 5; 1 Chronicles 11-12
Devotional Thought:
Title: “The Power of God’s Word.”
When David slew Goliath, there was a premature acknowledgment that David was presumed leader of Israel. The women sang his praises, stirring the jealousy of Saul. Abner claimed that the Lord had made known that by David’s hand salvation would come to Israel. (3:18) Now, in vs. 1-2, the nation acknowledges David, “one from among (their) brethren…” (Deut 17:15), whom Israel clearly recognized now as their God appointed leader. The parallel passage in 1 Chronicles 11:3 views the crowning of David over all Israel as the fulfillment of Samuel’s ministry: “… they anointed David king over Israel, according to the word of the Lord by Samuel.” What encouragement to anyone who might think that the Word of the Lord might fail and not accomplish the purpose to that which it was sent! (Isa 55:11) But how solemn a reminder for those that should know the Word of the Lord and oppose its importance! So often it is not ignorance of the Word of God keeps a person from obeying the content of scripture. We typically do not lack for data. However, it is often times a weak affection for Christ that provides little motive to obey Him. It can sometimes be a lack of faith to believe that God will provide, protect, or give peace in the path of obedience. It is worthy to note that God Himself acted to bring to pass His promise to David. David did not slay Saul or Jonathan in battle, nor plot the assassination of Abner nor Ishbosheth. God, who made known His purpose to David, removed those who stood between David and the throne. In due time God acted for David. In our own personal circumstances we are often tested in the waiting period before God acts. Abraham was promised a great nation through a promised son. However, often like Abraham, we take things into our own hands, forgetting we are entirely dependent on God Himself to give force to His truth and His program.
Personal Prayer Requests:
- Lord, please help me to always be willing to wait on you and your perfect timing for your will.
- Lord, thank you for the confidence I can have in your word to accomplish everything it is sent to accomplish. I do not need to manipulate or maneuver it, but rather just simply declare it.
- Lord, please help me to grow in my love for you and let it be my motivation for obedience.
