Pastor’s Bible Reading Schedule:
2 Chronicles 6-10
In chapter 10 we enter a new unit in Chronicles. After the history leading up to David, consisting mostly of genealogies, there are lengthy sections on the reigns of David and Solomon. Now we begin the fourth section, a history of the kings of Judah. No king gets as lengthy a treatment as David and Solomon did, and most of what follows, with a few exceptions, is in narrative style. There will be few lengthy lists! š
Second Chronicles differs significantly from 1 and 2 Kings because it focuses specifically on the kings of the Southern Kingdom, Judah. Whereas 1 and 2 Kings alternate between the two kingdoms, in 2 Chronicles the northern kings of Israel appear only if they have direct relevance to a southern king, and there are a number of unexplained references to the Northern Kingdom. Presumably, the chronicler assumed that his readers already knew about the situations, so he did not include them in his narrative.
Remember that the chronicler’s purpose was to demonstrate the continuity between the returned exiles living in Jerusalem and God’s people in former days. The history of the northern tribes could not help with this purpose since they had long ago severed themselves from Jerusalem and the temple. But a survey of the southern kings, their struggles with obedience to God, and their relationship to the temple would help to explain what the people in Ezra’s day needed in order to repent and return to God’s plan.
Christians today are not really all that different from the Israelites. We often live independent of God, disobey clear commands, forsake the church, distort true worship, and stand in need of repenting. May we humble ourselves before God and submit to the truth of the word of God.
