Pastor’s Bible Reading Schedule:
Psalm 140-142
It is impossible to articulate the importance of prayer. Anyone who has ever really been mightily used by God has had a consistent and powerful prayer life. The ministry of intercession is a powerful weapon available to all believers. We are encouraged to intercede for government leaders and even all mankind. (2 Tim. 2:1-2) It is unfortunate that many Christians conclude that prayer is important for pastors and missionaries etc; however, all Christians are called to the ministry of prayer. Everyone can pray, and everyone must pray. I have reminded our church often that prayer is to our spiritual body what oxygen is to our human body. We are utterly dependent upon it. One author reminds us that “Prayer can do whatever God can do.” Prayer is mighty because it summons the divine power to accomplish God’s sovereign will. Prayer unleashes the power of God to do the will of God. No Christian’s ministry or life will advance any further than his prayer life. There is no greater need for us as Christians, than to pray.
This is the emphasis of Psalm 141. It records a prayer of David seeking deliverance from wicked men and their evil ways. Psalm 141 does not only teach us what David prayed, but how he prayed. It is a personal psalm of David in which he pours out his heart to God in passionate prayer. The occasion is unknown. But the lessons to be learned here are clear. We need to pray!
As the disciples in Luke 11 asked the Lord, “Teach us to pray,” so each of us should spend time asking God to teach us to pray. Psalm 141 could be an answer to that prayer and a wonderful example for us to follow. Do you pray? How do your pray? What are you looking for when you pray? May our Heavenly Father truly teach us to pray!
