Psalm 146-148
The joining together for public worship of God’s people is one of the most important aspects of any Christian’s life. There is no debate that the clear vehicle God is using to accomplish His program in this dispensation is the local church. It is doubtful that any believer who is capable of attending church but who remains irregular in attending church can be growing in the grace and knowledge of Christ. The Christian life was never intended to be lived in isolation from the body of Christ. The divine design is that all saints should live in close fellowship with one another. A key part of this experience is assembling together in regular worship. All believers need the psalmist’s urging to come to God’s house and give praise to God with other like-minded saints. It is a family that allows brothers and sisters in Christ to demonstrate the love of God as they love each other.
This is the focus of Psalm 147, a praise song that reminds believers how good God is and how good it is to worship God. This psalm is thought to be written after the time of Israel’s return to Jerusalem from the Babylonian captivity. It was probably written to celebrate the completion of the rebuilt wall around Jerusalem under Nehemiah’s leadership. That was indeed a joyous occasion, one that called for fervent praise to God for all that He had done in restoring them to the holy city, Jerusalem. The psalm is written in three parts, each with its own call to worship followed by the causes for that worship. Have you worshipped the Lord this morning? Do you know the causes of your worship?
