Pastor’s Bible Reading Schedule:
Numbers 7-9
The Lord had already consecrated the priests who would serve in the tabernacle. Therefore, in chapter 8, He sets apart their assistants, the Levites, for their service. The first step was to sprinkle on them the water of cleansing, water probably taken from the laver in the courtyard. Then the Levites shaved the hair from their bodies and washed their clothes. For their offering the Levites presented a young bull with a grain offering followed by a second bull for a sin offering. Then they were to assemble in front of the Lord where the community would lay their hands on them. The Levites were thus presented before the Lord as a wave offering from the Israelites in order to commission them for service. The Lord set aside the tribe of Levites as His own possession to be continually employed in His service. The Levites next offered one bull for a sin offering followed by another bull for a burnt offering.
Once the Levites were ordained for their service, they could enter into their duties. They stood in close relation to the Lord by His calling in their lives, and hence the Lord Himself was their inheritance. The Lord required the entire first born of all the Israelites and accepted this tribe in their stead. Any violation of this decree would result in a judgment of plague.Moses and all the people did with the Levites just as the Lord commanded Moses. The Levites then began their service under the supervision of Aaron and his sons, the priests.
