Psalm 111-113
Everyone has someone or something at the very center of their lives. No one is without a driving force and consuming passion at the core of his being. For some people, their lives revolve around good things, like their children, career, parents, or even ministry. For other people, their lives center on shallow things, such as a favorite sports team, their yard, or a hobby. And yet for others, their lives rotate around the shallowest of all things-themselves. But for the Christian, everything in his or her life revolves around one driving passion and one dominant pursuit-God himself. God must be at the center of every life, or it will be off track. Everything and everyone else must be secondary; God must be primary. This is the heart of a God-centered life.
This is the central thrust of Psalm 112. It is a psalm about what it looks like for a believer to live a God-centered life, one in which God is the sum and substance of their entire life. This is a wisdom psalm designed to reveal the path of the godly. The hallmarks of a wisdom psalm, found in this song, are: (1) It begins “Blessed is the man” as do other wisdom psalms; (2) it calls for the fear of the Lord; (3) it uses proverbial expressions; and (4) it sharply contrasts between the roads of life.
This Psalm reminds us that there are consequences, good or bad, from every decision of life we make. The path of the transgressor or of foolishness is hard, dangerous, and empty. However, the path of wisdom or godliness is fulfilling, secure, delightful. May we today focus on pleasing the Lord Jesus and making Him proud of us.
