Pastor’s Bible Reading Schedule:
Proverbs 25
Saturday: Amos 5-9
Sunday: John 19-21
King Solomon was the prime example of leadership in his day, so it is natural that he included numerous proverbs on leadership and the running of government. Well over a century after Solomon’s death, Hezekiah king of Judah valued his predecessor’s advice enough to commission scholars to add an appendix to the Book of Proverbs.
A king needs to know what is going on in his realm, a sign of his administrative skill, to probe all the aspects of his kingdom. God,on the other hand, already knows everything, so he never needs to carry out an investigation. Part of his glory rests in the fact that his knowledge extends far beyond our ability to comprehend. We know as much as he chooses to reveal, and there is deep truth that remains a mystery to us. Recognizing the depth of God’s wisdom leads us to approach him with awe and reverence. Unfortunately, in the information age, people feel they are entitled to be in the know. There is often little trust for the leader who does not give the details or information that people want to know.
Proverbs 25:3carries on the parallel between God’s ultimate kingship and the limited authority of human kings. Just as the heavens and the earth stretch far beyond the limited comprehension of an individual, the matters of a ruler are often unsearchable, hidden from the common citizen. It is impossible to read a king’s heart, and a ruler must be able to hide certain plans until the time is right to reveal them. The will of God always includes the when as well as the what. Sometimes we may know what is the will of God, but we are waiting for the when.
