Suggested Bible Reading: Numbers 3-4
Devotional Thought:
Chapters 3 and 4 of Numbers form a little section by themselves and have much to say about the Levites and their appointment by God to the special work they were to perform. In chapter 3 we find the call of the Levites, the separation of their work, and the numbering from one month old and older. In chapter 4 we find the charge to the Levites, the details of their responsibilities, and the numbering from 30 years and older. Only in Numbers is the work of the Levites dwelt upon with such detail. Just as the priests figure clearly in the book of Leviticus, so the Levites are focused upon in Numbers. The priests served in the sanctuary, but the Levites were to guard it, attend to it, and transport it with its coverings through the wilderness. It is interesting to point out that every priest was a Levite, but not every Levite was a priest. Only those born into the family of Aaron were eligible to be priests. It might well be asked why the tribe of Levi was specially marked out from all others to such a holy service. It is true they are given as a provision for Aaron and his sons as is pointed out in verses 5-13. It is also true that their privileged place of service is given as a reward for their faithfulness in the incident of the golden calf apostasy. (Ex 32:28, 29) It must not be overlooked, however, that in the choice of the Levites for tabernacle service there is seen the wonderful working of divine grace. Jacob’s words about Levi prove that, because of their past history, they did not deserve to be used by God for service. Such is the case for us! “Simeon and Levi are brethren; instruments of cruelty are in their habitations. O my soul, come thou not into their secret.” (Gen 49:56) This is a reference back to Genesis 34 and the dreadful story of their cruel action against Hamor and Shechem. Levi, instead of holding instruments of war, is now called by God to handle the instruments of worship. (vs. 8) What a contrast this is! Only the grace of God could do such a thing. We are all guilty of things that certainly violate God’s standard of righteousness, and we possess regret over decisions that we have made in our immaturity. How gracious is God to use such broken and self-centered instruments for His service. May we never forget God’s design, decision, and demand for us to serve Him according to the clear instruction of His word. May we never get over the grace that He shows in allowing us to serve Him.
Prayer Requests:
• Lord, please help to take serious the parameters and commands you place upon service for you. May I be found faithful.
• Lord, thank you for the grace you show in allowing me to serve you and represent you to a lost and dying world.
• Lord, please help me to never presume upon your grace and may I never forget the grace you show each day and your mercies that are new every morning.
