Suggested Bible Reading: Deuteronomy 1-2
Devotional Thought:
The refusal of Israel to obey God in not entering Canaan (Numbers 13:26-33) had been costly as is very clearly presented in the book of Numbers. A generation had died in the wilderness, but Joshua and Caleb, the only two spies who had returned from their scouting of the land and urged the people to enter without delay, were still with them. Both had a remarkable part to play in the events that lie ahead. It must have been with sadness that these two faithful men viewed the company that gathered to hear the words of Moses. The excitement in the hearts of Caleb and Joshua would be tinged with sorrow as they thought of the many who had died during the journey. It has been my experience in ministry that there is so many that miss out on the blessings of God upon the church because the Devil convinced them that a carnal and more sinful route would be better. The lesson to be learned in this chapter is clear. Sin always brings sorrow and the loss of enjoyment of the blessings that flow from God. The question may be asked, “Why did Moses, at this stage of the journey, recount the events of the past?” I have dealt with so many that became more and more bitter as the consequences of sin mounted up and the individual refused to acknowledge how God was dealing with them. They continue to play the part of the victim, blaming everyone else for the consequences they face. If the Israelites were to enjoy the Land and its blessings they must understand how and why God acted as He did. If this was true of Israel in that day, how much more is it true with Christians today! If we are to enjoy “all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ” (Eph. 1:3) it will be necessary to have an increasing understanding of the ways of God and a transparent honesty with ourselves. Travelling from Horeb to Kadeshbarnea should have been an eleven-day journey. It may have been extended because the sin of Miriam, in wanting control and speaking against Moses, which resulted in the journey coming to a halt for seven days. (Num 12:15) There was doubtless a warning to Israel that sin delays progress. It is sad to read that they did not heed the warning. Adding to the selfishness of these days the people murmured against Moses and complained about the manna. (Num 11:1-35) All this came from a people who had seen such deliverance from Egypt and now enjoyed the presence of the Lord in their midst. Truly the enjoyment of blessing from the Lord too often does not result in us becoming more grateful and more devoted to Him. Too often God’s blessings are given so bountifully and regularly that we take them for granted and see them as a “right.” Shame on us!
