Pastor’s Bible Reading Schedule:
Psalm 119:1-72
Psalm 119:7-11
7 I will praise thee with uprightness of heart, when I shall have learned thy righteous judgments.
8 I will keep thy statutes: O forsake me not utterly.
9 Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way? by taking heed thereto according to thy word.
10 With my whole heart have I sought thee: O let me not wander from thy commandments.
11 Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.
The basic theme of Psalm 119 is the practical use of the Word of God in the life of the believer. When we consider that the writer did not have a complete Old Testament, let alone a complete Bible, this emphasis is remarkable and unmistakably important. Today, we own complete Bibles, yet how many of us say that we love God’s Word and get up early in the morning or stay up at night to read it and meditate on it? However, the psalmist of chapter 119 rejoiced in the Old Testament Scriptures, which was quite possibly the only Word of God he had. He considered it the most important thing in life. His love for the Word of God puts many of us to shame. If the psalmist with his limited knowledge and resources could live a godly and victorious life feeding on the Old Testament, how much more ought Christians today live for the Lord. After all, we have the entire Bible and the freedom to live it out.
When the psalmist used any of the seven words for the Scriptures, he was referring to much more than the Ten Commandments and the ceremonial instructions that have now been fulfilled in Christ. He was referring to the entire revelation of God revealed to him. Do you love God’s word like you should? Is it the priority that it should be? How do you fit it into your daily life? Is it an afterthought or is it the priority? I trust your heart has been challenged in these first verses of this chapter to make God’s word the center of our lives.
