2 Samuel 1-4
No one who knew Kurt Warner in the early 1990s at the University of Northern Iowa would have predicted that he would be picked as the most valuable player of Super Bowl XXXIV less than ten years later. But he was. On January 30, 2000, quarterback Kurt Warner completed 24 passes for 414 yards and two touchdowns, leading the St. Louis Rams to their first-ever Super Bowl championship.
Though Kurt played on Northern Iowa’s varsity football squad for four years, he did not become a starter there until his senior year. In his final year at the university his true talent for football began to sparkle, however, as he was named the Gateway Conference player of the year. Warner tried out after graduation for a position with the Green Bay Packers, but was cut from the team before the regular season began. Needing income, he got a job stocking shelves at a grocery store. It seemed his hopes for a professional football career were over.
But his dreams did not die. Looking for something connected with professional football, Warner signed a contract in 1995 with the Iowa Barnstormers, an Arena League football team. He continued to play with that team through the 1997 season, twice being named as the first team all-Arena League quarterback. His talents caught the attention of the St. Louis Rams in 1998, and they gave him a contract, assigning him to play in NFL Europe with the Amsterdam Admirals to gain playing experience and skill. Returning to the United States for the 1999 season, he was the Rams’ third-string quarterback until both those ahead of him, Trent Green and Paul Justin, were injured. The Rams’ head coach Dick Vermeil just wanted Warner to help the team win a game or two until Trent Green could get healthy. But Warner was determined to do more than that. He led the team to a 13-3 record and the Super Bowl championship, with a 23-16 victory over the Tennessee Titans.
Immediately after the Super Bowl victory Warner was asked the question by ABC reporter Mike Tirico, “First things first: did you say anything before you guys went out for that play?” Warner’s immediate response was, “First things first: I gotta give the glory to my Lord and Savior up above. Thank you, Jesus!” Kurt Warner understood that the Lord was the true reason he overcame every obstacle to achieve great success. David reminds a nation to remember that victory comes from the Lord and that they needed to recognize the Lord in helping them experience victory over Amalek and be reunited with their wives and families.
