Pastor’s Bible Reading Schedule:
Numbers 10-12
How could Moses endure the incessant complaints of so large a throng? Here Moses indulged in a bit of self-pity. Did Moses forget the horrid conditions in Egypt? Did he not recall his own deliverance so many decades ago when he fled to Midian after killing an Egyptian? And how could he not remember and appreciate the Lord’s deliverance from Egypt through signs and wonders? Moses then sought to excuse himself from caring for these people because they were not his problem. He didn’t create this nation, nor had he sought to lead them in the first place. Furthermore, how could he provide for them with the minimal resources of such an arid place? Moses saw only personal ruin ahead and in chapter 11, he requested his own death.
The Lord saw things in a different light, and He used this situation to teach Moses about shared leadership. The Lord divided some of Moses’ leadership among seventy of Israel’s elders by giving them the same Spirit that rested on Moses and enabling them to carry the burden of the people. I am so thankful for the people that God has placed in my life to help me carry the responsibilities of the ministry.
The Lord told Moses to have the people prepare themselves for the Lord’s next visitation… one that would give them meat to eat. But the Lord would also punish them for their unbelief and perhaps cause them to understand that any food can become monotonous if eaten long enough. Moses questioned the Lord about how He could do all this. The Lord asked Moses a question: “Is the Lord’s arm too short?”With these words Moses shared with the people the Lord’s words and also gathered the seventy elders who would assume greater leadership responsibility. Starting in verse 26, we see a glimpse of Moses’ true character and also a trait necessary for anyone who would be used of the Lord: humility.
The Lord brought the promised quail through a strong wind. They gathered liberal quantities of these quail throughout the camp. But even while they consumed the quail, the Lord struck them with a severe plague. Moses called the place Kibroth Hattaavah, which means, “grave of lusts,” possibly hinting that only those who gorged on the meat perished.
