Pastor’s Bible Reading Schedule:
Psalm 57-59
In 2 Samuel 17, Absalom consults Ahithophel and Hushai for advice on how to defeat David. Absalom rejects Ahithophel’s plan in favor of Hushai’s. Hushai then secretly passes word along to David, telling him how to avoid being defeated by Absalom.
The God who permits believers to fall into fiery trials is the same God who can deliver them from these troubles. When surrounded by adversity, God’s people should call upon him to rescue them out of their troubles. This was the experience of David in Psalm 57, a heartfelt prayer for deliverance when he was threatened by Saul. Though threatened by Saul, David expressed unwavering confidence that God would rescue him from this desperate situation. We too can run to God in the midst of our trials. However, we must be willing to make the will of God successful. Often, when we are facing trials, we want God to change our situation to what we want. It is so important that we allow God to work His will in our lives with His view of eternity in mind. Even as I am typing this, I am listening to a song entitled, “That is what grace is for.” When we let God have His way and we submit our will to His… that is what grace is for.
Psalm 57 is connected to the previous psalm, Psalm 56, in its historical background and poetic language. A soul-stirring refrain is repeated in this psalm, “Be Thou exalted, O God, above the heavens” (vs. 5, 11), much like the chorus that connects Psalm 42 with Psalm 43. This refrain calls upon God to exalt Himself, to exercise His sovereignty by ministering to David’s troublesome circumstances and to show Himself to be Lord over all. Here is a humble appeal for God’s mercy to be showered upon David.
