Pastor’s Bible Reading Schedule:
Deuteronomy 15-17
Key Thought:
I love sermon illustrations like this one. It reminds us that God is always in control and He is directing our lives to make an eternal difference. During this Corona Virus scare, we must be looking for ways that God can use us for eternal good.
Henry Crowell was only nine years old when his father died of tuberculosis. When he was seventeen, Crowell discovered he had the same disease. To all appearances, he was dying. That may have moved Crowell to attend an evangelistic meeting in Cleveland, Ohio, where the featured speaker was a man by the name of Dwight L. Moody. Moody told the crowd that the world had yet to see what could be done through a person whose life was fully consecrated to Jesus Christ.
As Crowell reflected on this statement, he decided that he wanted to be that person. But how could God use him? He had no idea. He was convinced that he could never preach. He did believe, however, that he could be a businessman useful in the service of the king. He didn’t know how long he would live, but he told God that in the time he had left he would support people like Dwight Moody who could proclaim the gospel. He also asked for healing as he consecrated the remainder of his life to God.
Crowell applied himself and invested his funds intelligently as the days passed. His health began to improve, and that encouraged him to buy a mill. It had been owned by Quakers and was designed to produce cereal products. The Quaker Oats Company had begun.
As Crowell’s health continued to improve, he also enjoyed a great deal of business success. God prospered the business, and Henry Crowell put the funds that came in to work, giving 70 percent of his income to Christian causes. The man who thought he was headed for an early grave instead left his mark on the Christian world through his generous giving and the wisdom he used in applying God’s resources.
