Jeremiah 9-10; 23
Jeremiah 9:23-24
23 Thus saith the LORD, Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, neither let the mighty man glory in his might, let not the rich man glory in his riches:
24 But let him that glorieth glory in this, that he understandeth and knoweth me, that I am the LORD which exercise lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness, in the earth: for in these things I delight, saith the LORD.
God has declared judgment upon the children of Judah for their idolatry and willingness to chase after false gods. In our day, we have watched Christians chase after the god of materialism and be deceived by the god of secular humanism. We may not have an idol sitting on a shelf that people bow to, but we have many people today bowing to the god of independence. Many will chase the dream of being financially free… living a life where there are no financial worries and there will be enough money to do whatever they want. People, even some Christians, are willing to sacrifice time and energy to chase the almighty dollar in the pursuit of a life of comfort, convenience, and often carnality. When asked about devotions, prayer, witnessing, serving in the church, etc. they often respond, “I just do not have enough time.”
Rather than living a life of dependence upon God and the need to communicate with Him all day long every day, people today are comfortable trusting their own wisdom, their own abilities, and their own money. They do not ask God for wisdom, they run their own lives. They do not ask God for strength, they trust in their own strength. They do not ask God what He would like done with His money, they spend it the way they want and on what they want. Unfortunately for all of us, there will come a day when we will not know what to do, we will not have the strength to do it, and there will not be enough money to keep our life going. It may be captivity not age that brings us to that point. When we stand before God there will not be reward for things we did in our own wisdom, in our own strength, or with our own money. Proper stewardship requires knowing what God want, doing it in His strength, and wisely using His money to accomplish His purposes and bring glory to Him. I fear these verses picture America and may bring the same result… the loss of freedom!
