Pastor’s Bible Reading Schedule:
Jeremiah 49; Obadiah
Obadiah 1:17-21
17 But upon mount Zion shall be deliverance, and there shall be holiness; and the house of Jacob shall possess their possessions.
18 And the house of Jacob shall be a fire, and the house of Joseph a flame, and the house of Esau for stubble, and they shall kindle in them, and devour them; and there shall not be any remaining of the house of Esau; for the LORD hath spoken it.
19 And they of the south shall possess the mount of Esau; and they of the plain the Philistines: and they shall possess the fields of Ephraim, and the fields of Samaria: and Benjamin shall possess Gilead.
20 And the captivity of this host of the children of Israel shall possess that of the Canaanites, even unto Zarephath; and the captivity of Jerusalem, which is in Sepharad, shall possess the cities of the south.
21 And saviours shall come up on mount Zion to judge the mount of Esau; and the kingdom shall be the LORD’S.
Obadiah shares his prophecy as a vision. It is fascinating to see that the message of the first five verses is the same message in Jeremiah 49:9, 14-16. God can use the same message already delivered to another group, in a different context to reveal His will for those distinctive people. Obadiah repeats the message that Jeremiah had preached knowing it was ultimately the message from God for the people to hear. It is always wise for preachers to remember the message they are preaching is ultimately from God, to accomplish God’s purposes, and ultimately for God’s glory.
God addresses the pride of Edom. It was manifested in the fact that they felt they were safe and secure in their mountainous dwellings. They prided themselves in their own conceits and their own craftiness. However, God was clear that He would bring them down. The end of the chapter we find that God promises to deal with every enemy of Israel. It is encouraging to me to know that God will not let evil prevail forever and there is a payday someday. The text is obviously referencing the wonderful millennial kingdom when Israel will enjoy all that God has promised them with perfect holiness. Where God will be their leader and they will enjoy perfect fellowship with Him. In a world of so much uncertainty, we must keep our eyes on the promises of God. We must truly put our trust in the Lord.
