There are no limits to the depraved condition to which mankind may fall, if left to the ways of their own wicked hearts. However, no matter how wicked man becomes, God is greater still, ruling over all, for His own purposes. God makes even the wrath of man to praise Him. This is the theme of Psalm 36, a song that reveals the utter sinfulness of mankind, but the supremacy of God over all.
Humanistic philosophies and worldly religions minimize such a great divide between these two extremes, elevating man and lowering God to such a point that they are virtually on equal footing. However, the Bible will have nothing of such folly. The truth is that God is high and lifted up, infinitely separated from sinful man. This psalm exposes depraved man for who he is, corrupt and condemned. Psalm 36 exalts God for who he is, full of love, righteousness, and wrath. Wise is the reader who puts man in his rightful place, falling short of God’s glory, and who puts God in his rightful place, ruling over all.
Today, spend some time praising God for who He is. We must express our gratitude through our humility and submission. Nothing is more revealing of our arrogance than our stubborn desire to satisfy our selfish desires. We must learn to live in the fear of the Lord.
