Pastor’s Bible Reading Schedule:
Joel 1-3
Saturday: John 13-15
Sunday: 2 Timothy 3-4
The good things in this life come from humility toward God, which leads to the fear of the Lord.Wednesday evening, we looked at the importance of fearing the Lord. A person who fears God cannot be full of selfish pride at the same time. He is in precisely the state that God can bless. Wealth, prosperity, and life are also described as the results of righteousness, showing the close connection between humility, fear of the Lord, and righteousness.
Pride goes with laziness, for the sluggard thinks that avoiding work is the surest proof of his wisdom. Seven men is a figurative way to say “anyone”; the sluggard considers himself the wisest of all. To the discerning listener, however, it is clear that his answers lack discretion. Proverbs 27:2 reminds us that when we regularly sing our own praises, we are motivated by pride (or insecurity) and obviously feel the need to make sure everyone else recognizes our excellence. If there is real merit, others will notice and carry the word for you.
God consistently operates on the principle that the first shall be last and the last first, even in the Old Testament. The proud man tries to elevate himself, but God brings him low.The one with a lowly or humble spirit will be raised to a position of honor. One reason God chooses to break down pride is that it motivates a person to live independently of Him.
