Zechariah 9:9-11
9 Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem: behold, thy King cometh unto thee: he is just, and having salvation; lowly, and riding upon an ass, and upon a colt the foal of an ass.
10 And I will cut off the chariot from Ephraim, and the horse from Jerusalem, and the battle bow shall be cut off: and he shall speak peace unto the heathen: and his dominion shall be from sea even to sea, and from the river even to the ends of the earth.
11 As for thee also, by the blood of thy covenant I have sent forth thy prisoners out of the pit wherein is no water.
Zechariah chapters 1 through 8 referred basically to the rebuilding of the temple. The goal was to simply encourage the people to rebuild God’s house… the temple. Chapters 9 to 14 deal mainly with the future events and were possibly written a long time after the first eight chapters. Chapters 1-8 deal with Israel while she was under Medo-Persian rule; chapters 9 and 10 when she was governed by Greece; chapter 11 when she was under Roman control; and chapters 12 to 14 deal with eschatology and the return of Christ at the revelation.
The prisoners were to have hope because their King was about to free them. Their king encourages them with their promise to enjoy their homeland. They were going to enjoy so much more than they had, for God was going to see to it that their cup runneth over. I cannot read these verses without making the application for me as God’s child. He rescued me from the depths and bondage of sin and He set my feet upon a rock and established my future. One day, He is going to rescue me from this sin cursed earth and take me to the place He has been preparing for me… my true home! God is a faithful, covenant keeping God and I am so thankful for that. My hope is truly in Jesus, my Savior!
