Pastor’s Bible Reading Schedule:
Psalm 105-107
William S. Plumer once wrote, “Blessed is he who sees God in history and in nature, as well as in revelation.” Surely the person who studies the Scripture is enlightened to see the invisible hand of God, presiding over the affairs of human history, directing it toward its appointed end
Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones said, “The key to the history of the world is the kingdom of God.” In other words, world history cannot be understood apart from God’s invisible hand upon redemptive history. The course of world events cannot be grasped without observing God at work in and through His people. Here is the hinge upon which all history turns. God is always working through His people to affect the events and function of the entire world.
This is the beauty of Psalm 105. This historical psalm chronicles in summary fashion the high points of the history of God’s people in the Old Testament. In this psalm, we see the invisible hand of God upon the many events, circumstances, movements, and causes of history. We see God not distant and far removed but up close, actively involved in the affairs of men, the events of nations, the rise of rulers, the course of kingdoms, and the direction of history. To be sure, history is His story.
Psalm 105 and 106 form a perfectly matched pair. Psalm 105 tells how God treated Israel and, ironically, Psalm 106 tells how Israel treated God. Where Psalm 105 speaks of God’s faithfulness to Israel; psalm 106 tells of Israel’s unfaithfulness to God. Psalm 105 speaks of the Lord’s grace; psalm 106, the people’s disgrace. In these two psalms, the double theme of the entire Bible is summarized, which is God’s salvation and man’s sin, God’s divine faithfulness and human unfaithfulness.
