Pastor’s Bible Reading Schedule:
Psalm 60-62
There are times when God’s people suffer defeat, giving the appearance that God has forsaken them. But such times of difficulty should not drive believers into despair. Rather, this should cause them to experience a deeper dependency on the Lord. This was the experience of David as recorded in Psalm 60. He prayed an urgent prayer for victory after suffering a devastating defeat.
The historical background is a time when Edom invaded the southern part of Judah and brought defeat to Israel. This conflict may be included in the recorded list of David’s wars which he fought against surrounding nations. In response to this invasion, David dispatched Joab, one of his chief commanders, to subdue this Edomite aggression. Joab returned to David with the good report that he had “struck down twelve thousand Edomites in the Valley of Salt,” and thus Israel had prevailed in victory.
According to commentaries Psalm 60 was to be sung “to the tune of ‘The Lily of the Covenant.” It contains David’s shock at the nation’s devastating military defeat as well as the confident hope that God would bring victory to David and the people. David realized that both victory and defeat come from the Lord.
We can learn that God answers prayer perfectly and He is right when He says yes and He is right when he says no. Even when he says “wait” the Lord has a purpose and we can praise Him and trust Him whatever His answer is. Will you trust Him?
