Suggested Bible Reading: Genesis 1-3
Devotional Thought:
I am so grateful for a God who is a God of excellence. It is interesting that at the end of every day God concluded that His work was good. The first day God created night and day and concluded that it was good. The second day God created the firmament. The firmament was the canopy of water that surrounded the earth creating the perfect environment known as the green house effect. As God saw the firmament He concluded that it was good. On the third day God separated the land from the seas and created the grass and trees and the herb yielding fruit. God commanded the trees and flowers to reproduce after their kind and He concluded that it was good. On the fourth day God created the sun, moon, and stars. The Hebrew word for day is the word “yom” which means a 24-hour day. The statements “evening and morning” also reinforce the 24-hour day. The order of creation also reinforces the teaching of a 24-hour day. If the trees, grass, and flowers were created the day before, knowing their dependence upon sunlight, we can conclude that there could not have been very much time between the time of their creation and the creation of the sun. God concluded after creating the lights of the heavens that is was good. On the fifth day God created the fish and fowls. His conclusion was that it was good. On the sixth day God created all the animals and he created man. God commanded these animals reproduce after their own kind. Man was created different from the animals in that they were created in God’s image. The image of God involved His body (God the Son), soul (God the Father), and spirit (God the Holy Spirit). The very creation of man showed the legitimacy of the Trinity. Genesis 2:7 says, “And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul. The difference between animals and humans is that they are created in God’s image and given a living soul. What grace for God to create us in His image that we might bear His name and magnify His wisdom. Genesis 1:31 declares, “And God saw everything that He had made, and, behold, it was very good.” I am thankful that my God teaches the importance of excellence. May we be people who are dedicated to representing God accurately as we seek to serve Him with excellence for God’s glory.
