Suggested Bible Reading: Mark 6
Devotional Thought:
It is a discouraging fact that we forget to thank God for the marvelous works He does in our lives. Mark 6:52 says, “For they considered not the miracle of the loaves: for their heart was hardened.” It had only been a few hours since they had witnessed this incredible miracle. Can it be that we see God do so many wonderful works that we begin to just take them for granted? This chapter is lengthy, but is filled with rich truths. It starts by Jesus lamenting the hard hearts of his countrymen. How they just wanted to see Him as a fellow human being. Unfortunately today, too many want to treat God as a buddy and not respect Him for his true position and power. Then we find him giving his disciples power over demons and a command to spread the gospel. Jesus gives a stiff warning to those who oppose the message and work of the disciples. “…It will be more tolerable for Sodom and Gomorrah in the day of judgment than for that city.” Then we see people discussing their opinion of who Christ really is. How sad to hear the depravity of Herod and Herodias when they are confronted with their sin. How the hearts of John’s disciples must have broke over the beheading of their beloved leader. Then Jesus tells his disciples that they needed to come apart to rest and to eat. It is interesting that Jesus knew the people would throng them before they could rest and they were going to need to serve people while they were tired. But Jesus having compassion and wanting to meet their need of hunger performs the miracle and feeds them using just five loaves and two fishes. However Jesus meet the needs of the disciples for the scripture is clear, they all ate and were filled.
It is sad that after seeing Jesus manifesting His power over demons, discouragement, and laws of nature, the disciples feared his presence. And when he removed the threat causing their fear, they marveled exceedingly and were amazed because they considered not the miracle of the loaves.
