Suggested Bible Reading: Genesis 22-24
Devotional Thought:
At the age of 75, Abraham enrolled in the “School of Faith.” By chapter 22, he was over 100, and he was still having faith-stretching experiences. We are never too old to mature through new challenges, maneuver through new battles, or manage through new truths. When we stop learning, we stop maturing; and when we stop maturing, we stop living. Abraham teaches us several lessons about the school of faith in this chapter. First, we must concentrate on the precepts of God not trying to find an exception. (vs. 1-2) My parents always taught me to do what we are told, when we are told, the way we were told, and with a good attitude. Abraham never argues with God, gets angry with God, or hesitates in completely obeying the voice of the Lord. Secondly, we must concentrate on the promises of God not trying to find an explanation. (vs. 3-5) God has a perfectly good reason for everything He brings or allows into our lives. God promises to pilot us, (Proverbs. 3:5-7) provide for us, (Philippians 4:19) protect us, (Isaiah 41:10) and prosper us through life’s journey. (John 15) Thirdly, we must concentrate on the picture of Christ not trying to find an Excuse. (vs. 7-14) Like Jesus, Isaac trusted his father and willingly followed his commands. Like Isaac, Jesus acted with the Father, accepted the fate, approved the fee, (wood mentioned 5 times) and anticipated the future. God does everything for a reason. He has His purpose, plan, programming, and His promises in mind. (Eph 1:11; 3:11) Fourthly, we must concentrate on pleasing our God not being frustrated over the expenses. (vs. 15-24) Like the testimony of William Borden teaches us, we must serve God without reservation, retreat, or regret. Genesis 22 records the greatest test that Abraham ever faced. It certainly presents a beautiful picture of our Lord’s sacrifice at Calvary; but the main lesson is obedient faith that matures us through the trials of life. Abraham teaches us how to face and handle the tests of life to the glory of God.
