Pastor’s Bible Reading Schedule: Isaiah 39-40; Mark 10
The world has such a warped understanding of leadership today. Jesus addresses the Gentile model or unsaved model of leadership and teaches His disciples a proper view of leadership. In Mark 10:42-45 we find the Biblical definition of leadership. “But Jesus called them to him, and saith unto them, Ye know that they which are accounted to rule over the Gentiles exercise lordship over them; and their great ones exercise authority upon them. But so shall it not be among you: but whosoever will be great among you, shall be your minister: And whosoever of you will be the chiefest, shall be servant of all. For even the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.” The world teaches that leadership is position (rule over), power (lordship over), prestige (their great ones), and privilege (exercise authority upon them). Jesus teaches us a much different mindset in leadership. “Whosoever will be great among you, shall be your minister.” The word for minister is the same word we get for deacon. It means to be a servant. Jesus said if you want to be a leader, learn to be a servant. However, if you really want to make a difference and be the “chief” leader, learn to be a slave! The word “servant” in the phrase, “shall be servant of all…” is a totally different word. Here the word means slave. A “doulos” exist simply to do the will of his master. If you truly want to make a difference for the cause of your Master, then become a slave to His calling. A servant merely serves somebody else, and somebody else owns a slave. How are you living? Are you a servant for God or a slave to God?
