Pastor’s Bible Reading Schedule:
Psalm 54-56
Life’s trials strip away any vestiges of self-confidence and anchors the soul to a deeper confidence in God. In such a humbling dependence, the believer calls on the name of God and finds strength in the midst of his weaknesses. Again and again in life, this is precisely where David found himself, calling on the Lord for help in a crisis too big for him to solve on his own. Psalm 54 is the record of his intentional reliance upon God, the third in a cluster of four psalms written by David in which he prayed for divine deliverance when he was pursued by Saul.
In this situation David had rescued an Israelite border town from the Philistines but was still considered a traitor to Saul. This psalm was written “when the Ziphites had gone to Saul and said, ‘Is not David hiding among us?'” The Ziphites were men from David’s own tribe, the tribe of Judah. Although he was being hotly pursued by ungodly men who sought to take his life, David trusted in the Lord to deliver him.
This psalm is a confession of confidence in God that he would protect David from his enemies. Amid much disappointment, David turned to the Lord who was his help (vs. 4). This psalm is an encouragement for any believer who has been wrongly accused.
