Psalm 131-133
The more a believer matures spiritually, the more childlike his faith will become. Growing to trust God involves assuming many of the qualities of a young child who looks to his parents with an unquestioning acceptance and unwavering reliance. This is not to say that believers should be childish, which is immaturity. Instability, selfishness, and complaining are undesired marks of carnality, not maturity. Rather, the Scripture calls us to be childlike in our faith, a much-desired virtue characterized by a simple, unquestioning, accepting dependence on God. As a child looks to his father to provide for his needs, so the child of God should look to his heavenly Father. Those believers who rely upon God like trusting children are those who exemplify that faith for which this psalm calls.
Psalm 131 is a hymn in which the psalmist confesses a simple trust in God. David is the author, but the specific circumstances are not apparent. He expresses his trusting faith in the Lord, strategically placed after Psalm 130. The person who knows the forgiveness for which the previous psalm calls is one who exercises childlike faith, as this psalm encourages. Here is a psalm of humble trust that invites everyone to do the same. Will you trust the Lord with all your heart today?
