Pastor’s Bible Reading Schedule:
Numbers 30-31
Key Thought:
There is an illustration about a Wycliffe missionary who tells about an encounter with a five-year-old neighbor boy. While she was washing breakfast dishes, she saw Jimmy heading straight toward the back porch. She had just finished painting the back-porch handrails and was proud of her work. “Come around to the front door, Jimmy,” she shouted. “There’s wet paint on the porch rails.” “I’ll be careful,” Jimmy replied, turning toward the back door. “No, Jimmy! Don’t come up the steps,” the missionary shouted, knowing of Jimmy’s tendency to mess things up. “I’ll be careful,” he said again, by now dangerously close to the steps. “Jimmy, stop!” the missionary now shouted with a degree of intensity. “I don’t want carefulness. I want obedience!”
We end this section of the Book of Numbers with the tribes of Reuben and Gad wanting to “climb up the front porch” and live on the eastern side of the Jordan River opposite the land that God had designated as an inheritance for Israel. History records that any time a Christian chooses to be careful instead of obedient, we sign up for all kinds of things that God is trying to save us from. “To obey is better than sacrifice.”
