I have been spending much time in the preaching this year reminding us of the importance of an eternal perspective to our everyday living. It is not uncommon to find people who treat serious matters lightly while holding unimportant matters like sports to be the most significant issues of the day. Important matters such as the possibility of life after death are treated with scorn, humor, or worst of all, dismissed as not worthy of serious thought.
Years ago I was sharing the gospel, on an airplane, with a student from a state university. The conversation was quite civil until I got to the part about the consequences of not trusting Jesus. The idea of hell was laughable to this well-educated young man. In fact, he went on to articulate the popular notion that if hell existed it couldn’t be so bad because all of his buddies would be there. It would be one big, happy party. We are certainly aware of the rock n roll songs that take the truth of hell and turn it upside down and express a lie about it. Hell is a place of torment and those who go there will never party, have pity, or participate in any sense of normalcy.
Solomon points to a better way in chapter 7. He wants us to know there are matters which merit serious and sustained attention. Those who want to be wise are encouraged to go to the places where serious thought is encouraged. To interpret all of life in light of eternity and a sovereign God, rather than the highs and lows of this temporal and temporary life.
Prayer Requests:

- Lord, please help me to honor you and your word by exalting it over my opinion or preferences.
